Preparing for Your Visit

Identification Needed:
A current driver’s license, government photo ID, or passport is required. The person whose signature is being notarized must be present with appropriate ID.

Documents to be Notarized:
Bring the completed document filled out EXCEPT for signatures. The Notary will only attest to original documents (not copies) signed in their presence and presented with a valid photo ID with signature. DO NOT sign your document in advance.

Signers and Witnesses:
The library does not supply witnesses. Witnesses must accompany the person whose document is notarized. Witnesses will also need proper identification. The Notary cannot act as witness.

Please Note

  • The Notary will not notarize documents that require specialized legal, financial, or technical knowledge such as mortgage or real estate documents, deeds, wills, living wills, living trusts, codicils, or depositions.
  • The Notary cannot provide legal advice or counseling regarding documents.
  • This facility will notarize documents written in English only.
  • New Jersey law requires that a notary and the customer seeking notarization be able to communicate directly with each other. Library notaries are not permitted to make use of a translator to communicate with a notary service customer.
  • The Notary will ensure that the signer understands the title of the document and is signing freely and willingly.
  • In accordance with New Jersey Notarial Law, Notaries reserve the right to decline service if the document(s), identification, or circumstances of the request for notary service raise any issue of authenticity, ambiguity, or doubt for the Library.
  • If you have questions about having your document notarized, call the library at 201-768-8714 and speak to a notary in advance.
