For Kids

Storytime at the Train Station – Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:30am – for infants to 4 year-olds – Join Ms. Cara for stories, songs, and coloring at the Demarest Train Station. Please bring your masks. No registration necessary.

Chess Club – Saturdays from 10:00am to 11:30am in the library Children’s Room – all ages – Come to the children’s room to learn and practice chess with other kids! All levels welcome. Registration not required, but space is limited.

Take Home Craft Kits – new kits available Tuesday, May 3 and Tuesday, May 17 – stop by the library to pick up an arts & crafts kit! Supplies limited. First-come, first-served.

Drop-in Mother’s Day Craft – Thursday, May 5 between 4:00pm and 7:45pm – ages 4 and up – Stop by to complete a quick craft for Mother’s Day! Craft supplies and instructions will be in the program room in the children’s section. Younger children will need some help from their adults while making this craft. Registration is not required.

Read to a Dog – Monday, May 9 and Monday, May 16 starting at 4:15pm at the Train Station – Children can practice their reading one-on-one with an adorable and loving therapy dog! Children may register for one ten-minute session per date.

Math Night – Wednesday, May 18 at 4:00pm in the Children’s Room – grades 1 to 5 – Join Closter Mathnasium at the library for rewards, giveaways, and math games for the whole family!

Korean Storytime – Monday, May 23, 3:30pm to 4:00pm at the Demarest Train Station – all ages – Korean-language stories will be read aloud by community volunteers! This program is offered in partnership with the Korean Demarest Parents Association. Registration is NOT required! Masks must be worn at all times.

Birdhouse Painting & Storytime – Tuesday, May 24 at 3:30pm at the Train Station – ages 4 and up – Listen to a story and then paint your own birdhouse with Ms. Cara!

Wacky Science – Thursday, May 26, 3:30pm in the Children’s Programming Room – ages 6 to 12 – Make your own slime and learn the science behind it with Ms. Cara!

Teen Book Club – Wednesday, June 1 at 4:00pm – The Teen Advisory Board is hosting a Teen Book Club! Meet with other teens to discuss The Cousins by Karen McManus at the library. Copies of the book are available at the library.

Peaceful, Calm Yoga – Thursdays, 11am to 12pm on Zoom – Continue your ever-growing yoga practice with our devoted instructor, Karen Noel. To participate in this class, you need to download Zoom software to your computer or the app to your mobile device, links to all of which can be found here.

Morning Spring Yoga with Anat Lavie – Wednesday, May 10, 10:30am, Demarest Train Station – Join Anat Lavie, Demarest resident and certified yoga teacher, for a spiritual somatic experience of hatha yoga, a body and mind purifying practice which combines slow poses, breath work, and meditation. All levels welcome.

Adult Book Club – Tuesday, May 10 at 7:30pm – May’s book is The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee. Request a copy via the catalog or pick one up at the upstairs desk. Also available as an eBook or digital audiobook on Libby or for instant borrow as a digital audiobook on hoopla.

The Dangers of Tech Support Scams – Wednesday, May 11 at 4pm, Library Programming Room – Monroe Township High School students are providing a presentation for adults and seniors on common technology scams and how to avoid them. Come by the downstairs programming room for important information to protect yourself or your loved ones. No registration required.

Creating a Compelling College Application for Juniors – Tuesday, May 17 at 7:00pm via Zoom – This Zoom presentation is designed to help high school juniors and their parents understand how to use the summer productively to create a compelling college application and increase their chances for admission. Dog Wellness & Grooming – Tuesday, May 24 at 11:00am, Demarest Train Station – Veterinarian Dr. Ursula Ramalho and Ingrid Makhail, co-owner of Jan’s Dog House, are teaming up to provide advice on caring for your dog from nose to tail and toenails, too. Learn best practices for training, socializing, and home-grooming your dog.
